President Rodrigo Duterte enjoined the predominantly Catholic country on Thursday to reflect on faith and peace during the observance of the Holy Week.
In his Maundy Thursday message, Duterte said that by remembering the death of Jesus Christ, "we remind ourselves of the immense power of love and compassion which is able to tear down walls of prejudice, selfishness and hate."
"Let the spirit of Lent inspire us to move ahead with faith and peace in our hearts as we persevere in bringing lasting and transformative change in our society," the president said.
"Guided by our sense of hope and grace, may we walk with renewed fervor and faith towards our shared path of a brighter and better future for all," he added.
Catholics around the world are commemorating the Lenten Season, reflecting on the passion and death of Jesus Christ, amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Worldwide, COVID-19 has killed more than 88,000 people, while over 1.4 million people have been infected, according to the Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 global tracker.
The Philippines now has 3,870 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 182 deaths and 96 recoveries. Luzon is under enhanced community quarantine, restricting people's movement, while other areas in the Visayas and Mindanao have imposed their own lockdown guidelines.
On Holy Wednesday, Duterte called on Filipinos to pray together and ask God for help in containing the spread of the virus.
