AREAS where restrictions have been eased can be placed again under a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) if the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation worsens, Malacañang warned on Tuesday.
Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases was expected this week to present its recommendation to President Rodrigo Duterte on whether to lift, modify, or extend the community quarantine enforced across the country.
He said the quarantine status of the country would be tackled by the President and the IATF members in a meeting in Davao City on Thursday.
“As I said, lahat ng desisyon ng IATF (All the decision of the IATF), whether or not to graduate to the next regime in the case of Metro Manila, to a MGCQ (modified general community quarantine), is always dependent on data. Tinitignan natin ang case doubling rate. Tinitignan po natin ang critical care capacity (We are looking at the case doubling and our critical care capacity),” Roque said during a virtual press briefing.
Metro Manila and Cebu City, however, will have to be examined very carefully if its lockdown status could be downgraded to MGCQ given its different health data, according to Roque.
The government sought to relax the lockdown measures across the country, allowing more businesses to reopen and public transportation to resume at reduced capacity in a bid to jumpstart the local economy.
After more than two months of strict lockdown, Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Central Visayas, Pangasinan, Zamboanga City, and Davao City have downgraded to the more relaxed GCQ until June 15.
Calabarzon is Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon.
The rest of the country has been placed under MGCQ, the lowest quarantine level implemented by the national government.
As of Monday, the country has recorded 22,474 cases of Covid-19, including 1,011 deaths. Most of the cases of infection are from Metro Manila.
