Vice President Leni Robredo will decide soon whether or not she will pursue the presidency in Eleksyon 2022, her spokesperson Barry Gutierrez said Wednesday.
Gutierrez was responding to the calls of various groups including urban poor labor leaders, lawyers, teachers, LGBT community, among others, urging Robredo to run for President in 2022.
"Malapit na tayo sa panahong tinukoy niya para sa pagpapahayag ng kanyang desisyon (We are nearing the time when she will announce her decision on this)," Gutierrez said in a statement.
"Nagpapasalamat si VP (Vice President) Leni sa lahat ng mga nagpahayag ng kanilang tiwala at suporta. Kasama sa kanyang proseso ng pagdedesisyon ang pakikinig sa mga panawagang ito (The Vice President is thankful for all the trust and support, and these calls will form part of her decision making process)," he added.
Robredo has earlier said that she is open to seeking the presidency, but also expressed concern that such bid will be difficult to mount with limited resources.
Likewise, Robredo has yet to crack the top five on the list of possible Eleksyon 2022 presidential race contenders based on pre-election polls.
Gutierrez, however, has also said previously that they are confident that the numbers will be there for Robredo if she decides to run for President.
The anti-administration coalition 1Sambayan revealed last June 12 the names of its Eleksyon 2022 president, vice president nominees. Robredo was among those being considered by the coalition.
The filing of candidacy for Eleksyon 2022 is scheduled from October 1 to 8.
Robredo won all her previous election bids in 2013 and 2016 as Camarines Sur representative and Vice President, respectively, as a candidate of the then ruling party, the Liberal Party (LP).
Since 2016, LP has been the minority party which Robredo chairs as the highest ranking elected public official in its ranks. —KG, GMA News
