Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Saturday night confirmed the appointment of Major General Andres Centino as Philippine Army chief, replacing Lieutenant General Jose Faustino.
Lorenzana did not give other details on the appointment.
Centino was commander of the 4th Infantry Division, which is based in Cagayan de Oro City.
Before becoming 4th ID commander in May last year, Centino was the Armed Forces Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations.
Meanwhile, Faustino previously headed the Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) in Davao City. He is due to retire by November of this year.
Both Centino and Faustino belonged to the Philippine Military Academy class of 1988.
Last March, Sen. Panfilo Lacson questioned Faustino's appointment as Army chief given that the law prohibits the appointment of an Army chief if he has less than a year left in service. — DVM, GMA News
