President Rodrigo Duterte is leaving it to God on whether he would run for vice president in the 2022 elections, his spokesperson said Thursday.
"He leaves it to God," presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said when asked during a press briefing if Duterte is considering running for vice president next year.
Asked if this means that Duterte is not ruling out a 2022 vice presidential bid since he said the same thing in 2015 when asked if he would run for president in 2016, Roque refused to give a categorical answer.
"You have to accept his answer for what it is. He leaves it to God," he said.
Duterte’s term ends on June 30, 2022.
A resolution by the ruling PDP-Laban party circulated in March urging Duterte to run for vice president in 2022, but House Deputy Speaker Eric Martinez, a party stalwart, later on clarified that it's not yet final.
Senator Manny Pacquiao, PDP-Laban acting president, said the resolution was not authorized by the party.
The resolution states the call of some members of the party for Duterte to seek the vice presidency in the 2022 elections as they want his policies to continue. —KBK, GMA News
