(June 3, 2021) – A law enforcement team from the national capital region killed two men in a running gun battle at a major highway linking southern provinces to Metro Manila, police said on Thursday.
Police officers from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chased a white van along the southbound lane of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) before a brief firefight ensued near Calamba City in Laguna.
The two gunmen, who were believed to be part of a robbery and kidnapping group preying on ethnic Chinese in Parañaque City, died in a hail of bullets from chasing policemen.
Witnesses said the chase started near the Eton exit of Santa Rosa City and ended near Silangan exit in Calamba City, both in Laguna province at around 3 pm.
The chase and gun battle caused monstrous traffic gridlock as motorists tried to avoid getting caught in the crossfire and as police investigated the crime scene.
South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) administration advised motorists to take alternate routes to avoid congestion.
This is a developing story.
