Philippine skaters receive scholarships for training and equipment

Three Filipino skaters will receive scholarship grants as part of the assistance given to them by several organizations.

According to the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU), figure skater Alisson Perticheto will receive the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), while the International Skating Union (ISU) will grant assistance to speed skater Julian Macaraeg and figure skater Gaby Panlilio.

"These are all monetary grants from the organizations to assist the athletes for their sport, either through training or equipment," PHSU president Nikki Cheng said in a message to GMA News Online.

Cheng said the ISU grant is a one-time grant for this season, while the IOC/POC grant runs for four months, and may be assessed for extension.

"Alisson's scholarship is assisting her in Switzerland, while Julian is out training in Utah, USA. As for Gaby, since rinks have been closed, it will mainly be used for purchase of equipment," she added.

Cheng said the scholarships will be of big help to the athletes.

"In order to compete on the world stage, our athletes need to have the best training possible. This scholarship would somewhat help subsidize the cost of training, and give them the opportunity to learn from coaches outside of the country," she said.

"Of course, this is still not enough to cover the training cost; however, we are very grateful for this support and we are hoping that this partial subsidy would help our athletes undergo training which will help them reach their fullest athletic potential."

Perticheto is a 2019 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, while Macaraeg represented the Philippines in the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships last March. Panlilio, meanwhile, was a former national champion for figure skating.
