Former president Benigno Aquino III pointed fingers at President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration regarding the shutdown of ABS-CBN Corporation.
Aquino said that the administration only created unnecessary problems regarding its decisions on the franchise of the media giant.
“This administration has put itself into a corner unnecessarily. If there is significant and sustained support for the reopening of [ABS-CBN], it will happen,” he said on a text message to Rappler.
“I won’t comment presently lest I help them inadvertently in solving their unnecessary problem.”
During Aquino’s term, there has been no action against the media or the franchise of the Kapamilya network. But the then president did show disdain for former Vice President Noli de Castro who is currently one of the anchors of the ABS-CBN newscast TV Patrol.
On the other hand, despite Aquino saying that it is an “unnecessary problem”, Foreign Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin Jr. stated that the former president also didn’t want to renew the ABS-CBN.
“Oddly PNoy too indicated he would not renew ABS-CBN’s franchise; only Joma Sison wants to renew it but will he do it when he is president? Ok. Back to my spiritual retreat,” Locsin said in a tweet.
House allies of Aquino were allegedly hesitant to renew the franchise of the network due to its continuous criticism against the administration which the then-president felt was too offensive and borderline nitpicking.
